Abstract

This paper will reflect on certain practical issues which arise in the application of adaptive control. A key problem that we wish to address is how to bring ideas of robust control into harmony with the notion of adaptation. In particular, we will argue that a central issue is the role that the available information plays in specifying the design procedure. We advocate that there should be a consistency between the kind of information used in robust control design and that used in adaptive control design. We will discuss how this might be achieved and we coin a new term, namely ‘integrated control’ for an approach to control design in which robust considerations and adaptation are part of a unified point of view. Our objective is to give physical insight into the problem rather than to give a rigorous mathematical treatment.
