Abstract

Recent development in hardware and network technology has lead to the availability of portable computers and ubiquitous wireless networks. The new research area of mobile computing is concerned with the handling of problems and opportunities arising in this new environment. As one part of this research area, mobile database systems are developed for handling large amounts of data in mobile systems.

In this paper we focus on the use of active database systems in a mobile environment. We propose for the first time a transaction model suitable for mobile and active database systems. It combines reduced consistency as required in mobile systems with the dimensions of active rules regarding their transactional binding. This transaction model is described at both an intuitive and a formal level.
