Sol-gel-derived coating films and applications

Chemistry, Spectroscopy and Applications of Sol-Gel Glasses

Part of the book series: Structure and Bonding ((STRUCTURE,volume 77))

Abstract

Processing of sol-gel-derived coating films and their recent applications to preparation of high technology inorganic materials have been reviewed. Usually, dip-coating technique is suitable for preparing thin films on substrates of large areas. The thickness of the film can be controlled by the composition and the viscosity of the coating solution, and the withdrawing speed. Preferred crystal orientation can be given depending on the conditions of preparation. Thus, the technique can be applied to accomplishing a large variety of advanced, functional films having optical, electronic, chemical, and mechanical functions. Many examples of such films have been cited and discussed.
