Coding and coded modulation techniques for reliable satellite and space communications

Abstract

This paper presents two coding and coded modulation schemes for reliable data transmission with high spectral efficiency, large coding gain, and reduced decoding complexity. In the first scheme, coded modulation is used in conjunction with concatenation either in single level or in multiple levels. In the second scheme, multilevel coded modulation is combined with multiple product codes. Three specific concatenated coded modulation schemes and one product coded modulation scheme are presented. Analytical and simulation results show that these schemes provide high reliability and achieve large coding gains over the uncoded QPSK system with reduced decoding complexity. These schemes have been proposed for the new NASA Bandwidth Efficient Standard for high-speed satellite communications.
