Abstract
We present a short review of some perturbative results concerning the renormalization of nonlinear σ-models with boundary relevant to the description of open bosonic strings. Special emphasis is given to the so-called β -function approach to derive effective actions for the massless excitations of the string. We comment also on the correct definition of the 2 dimensional stress tensor in the presence of anti' symmetric tensor field background.
