Abstract

A short review of quantitative photometric tracers of star formation and their limits is given. We separate distance-dependent indicators of current star formation rates (SFR) from those (colors and equivalent widths) which, distance independent, yield access to the present/past SFR ratio. Extinction and Initial Mass Function (IMF) are considered. A comparison of SFR values from various sources shows agreement at a local (per unit mass) but not global scale while no discrepancy appears for present/past SFR ratio.
