Abstract
The emerging knowledge economy is not only changing existing industries and companies, it is also creating entirely new business opportunities which are purely knowledge based. The global, digital information network known as the Internet, enables information products to be duplicated and distributed at virtually no cost, and almost at the speed of light.
The rapid production and dissemination of new knowledge creates turmoil for most organizations, and establishes a dynamic business environment where communication and coordination become more important than ever. The traditional mechanisms for coordination are not sufficient, simply because they are too cumbersome and require too much attention.
The digital network removes many of the constraints imposed by physical communication media, and hereby creates opportunities for new organizational forms that may be capable to cope with the dynamic complexity of the knowledge societies.
