Enhancing information comprehension through hypertext

Abstract

We discuss the process, issues and lessons learned in designing and implementing the World Wide Web (WWW) version of the August 1995 special issue of the Communications of the ACM on hypermedia design. The vast majority of WWW authors rely on the text of the link's anchor to provide 100% of the semantic information about the destination and purpose of the link. Yet, following a link often takes the reader out of the current context. We discuss remedying this by providing semantic link labels and other information about a link's purpose and destination, so that readers can evaluate whether to follow a link without having to select it.
