Abstract

A new class of nuclear reactions is discussed where the available energy is completely converted into one degree of freedom - in contrast to the usually observed thermalization process. A general mechanism for such coherent many body transitions is presented and applied at low and intermediate energies to radiative and pionic fusion, respectively. The investigation of such cooperative phenomena may open up a new domain of nuclear research; some perspectives are briefly mentioned.
