Abstract

A brief review of the background to the field of liquid crystalline copolyesters (LCPs) is presented. Recent progress on interpreting the behavior of these polymers is described. In particular, the nature of the high temperature transitions of the aromatic polyesters is discussed. Reasonably definitive evidence is presented on the nature of the microstructure of these copolyesters. The tendency for randomizing or ordering of the sequence distribution on heating at elevated temperatures is discussed in terms of chemical processes involving intrachain transesterification reactions. The potential to fabricate LCPs as adhesives, protective coatings, matrix composites and structural foams is indicated.
