Abstract
In recent natural language generation research there has been a push towards representing knowledge in a declarative and modular way, resulting in constraint-based architectures for generators. This paper discusses the role of information about the user in a constraint-based model of text generation. We describe an application where it is crucial for the system to anticipate the user's interpretation process. Given this setting we investigate conflicts in the generation process that are due to information about the user. We demonstrate how conflicts arise and we try to point out solutions for them. Finally, we briefly present directions for future research.
