Abstract
Explaining expert systems requires explicit and rich representations of the underlying knowledge. As a step towards reaching adequate representation models have been proposed as the basis for the knowledge processing needed for explanation. The main problem is the description of problem solving processes. If that is achieved explanation methods can be conceived as quite general, semantic operations on models.
