Abstract

This paper presents an approach to agent modelling using a logic of defaults in a natural language environment. We derive the agent's beliefs from his utterances using the minimal default reasoning framework Theorist. Following Gazdar [1979], we take the position that utterance meaning is more than just what is asserted, and derive implicatures and presuppositions through a theory of communications expressed within the logic. Immediate advantages of this approach are its representational clarity over other strategies, and its ease of implementation. Applications to user modelling are investigated, and a prototype is discussed with reference to related work.
