Abstract

The field of desorption studies is seen to be interwoven with many aspects of adsorption studies in general, theoretical, experimental, and practical. While the physical mechanisms are not yet clearly understood in all cases and the experimental data still contain many uncertainties, the problems are now reasonably well defined; the experimental methods, though far from flawless, promise significant results, and the theoretical approaches become less dependent on doubtful assumptions. Important developments can, therefore, be expected in the near future, as for the general field of surface physics.
