Abstract
An attempt to define precise Feynman rules for theories of gauge fields in axial gauges is made by requiring consistency with theories in covariant gauges. The Wilson line operators are used to construct a modified fermion propagator which is invariant under a restricted class of gauge transformations comprising the ones that relate axial to some covariant gauge. Calculating the modified fermion propagator in the axial gauge with the Cauchy principal value prescription for spurious singularities of the gauge field propagator and with the Landshoff's prescription, it is found to one-loop order that at least one of the prescriptions is not consistent with covariant gauge Feynman rules.
