Simultaneous CAE system for reducing engine radiated noise — study of a method for calculating sound-absorbing material characteristics using radiated noise contribution factor analysis -
In developing new vehicle models to meet a wide variety of performance requirements, consideration should also be given to the manufacturing process and the selection of materials based on analytical simulations. Thus, simultaneous CAE has become an important issue in new model development today. Work has been advancing recently on systems that can carry out performance simulations and manufacturing process studies simultaneously. However, very little work has been done on the development of systems for conducting performance simulations and the selection of materials simultaneously.
Among the various performance requirements that cars must meet, noise radiated from the engine is one important factor affecting marketability because of its effect on vehicle interior noise and exterior noise. The type of sound-absorbing materials used has a significant effect in the resulting sound field characteristics. In this investigation, an attempt was made to conduct performance simulations simultaneously with the selection of sound-absorbing materials to be used in the engine compartment. The concept of the radiated noise contribution was introduced to a radiated noise analysis program based on the boundary element method.
This paper describes the theory behind this method and its application to an actual engine.
