Abstract

Periodic influences of ocean tides on Earth rotation are described in the first part of this paper. UT1 changes (Universal Time) as well as a small polar motion are affected. The second part concerns tidal friction by the ocean tides. Observational evidence and hydrodynamic theory are treated. Tidal friction leads to the secular deceleration of the Earth's rotation and to the evolution of the lunar orbit.
