Abstract

Electrofocusing has been applied to characterize the organic matter in pig slurries during incubation. In general, raw pig slurries are resolved in bands that localize mainly in the acid region of the pH gradient, whereas after some months of incubation a much more complex pattern of bands develops, characteristically, in the neutral region of the gradient. Such development of new fractions is markedly evident if incubation is carried out in summer, though in winter the process occurs at a slower rate. Stabilization of pig slurry leads to electrofocusing profiles that are somewhat similar to those of organic matter in the soil. From a qualitative point of view, electrofocusing is suggested to be a fast, reliable, and perhaps a more simple method of assessing stabilization (i.e., maturation or humification) of the organic matter in the slurries.
