Abstract

For the Tertiary as well for Europe as for southern Germany herptile distributions are shown. Their distributional patterns are discussed in context with geological events, here mainly the Ries Event. Reflections supporting the latter are made with palaeobotany, palaeozoology and palaeoclimatology. Faunal changes of the European Tertiary based on palaeoherpetological analyses are mentioned particularly for the Eocene-Oligocene boundary and for the mid-Miocene Ries Event.
