Abstract
This study aims to define the biostratigraphc and lithostratigraphic characteristics of Maastrichtian and Lower Paleocene units, cropping out in the Haymana-Polatlı region (SW of Ankara).
As a consequence of the tectonic movements in the oldest Paleocene (Danian), the non-marine sediments (as, e.g., the Kartal Formation) are most widespread in the studied area and various parts of the territory of Turkey. Principal changes of benthic Foraminifera occurred at the end of Maastrichtian or at the beginning of Danian stages. The extinction of some benthic Foraminifera (Assemblage I) and appearance of endemic (?) foraminiferal taxa (Assemblage II) have been well recognized in the measured sections from the Beyobası Fm. (in the shelf environments) and Çaldağ Fm. (in the reef environment). Consequently, from this biostratigraphic point of view, the Danian Stage must be attributed to the Tertiary.
