Abstract

A photometric survey of 27 3CR galaxies with z>1 is presented. Unprecedented image quality of the data (mean FWHM=O"75 for the sample) have allowed us to find that ] of the galaxies are made of 2 to 6 components in a typical 50(Ho/50) kpc size.

We present direct as well as statistical evidences showing that the sample is subjected to significant gravitational magnification effects. In 4 cases where a foreground bright galaxy has been observed near the 3C object, the geometric configuration is well known and the basic parameters can be estimated; this allows gravitational magnification calculations to be made and show that these galaxies are magnified by 0.5 to 1.6 mag. Four galaxies over 27 are found at less than 4 arcsec from R<21 foreground galaxies, 9 times more than expected from a random distribution, and shows that the sample is affected in a statistical way by the foreground matter. We finally emphasize the importance of taking into account the gravitational magnification effects before estimating the amount of evolution in these systems.
