Abstract

Some extremely simple identification-free algorithms for self-tuning PID controllers realizable on single-board or single-chip microcomputers have been developed. The algorithms are based on the fact that single PI or PID control loops behave like a second or third order system, regardless of the controlled plant order. This enables us to characterize any control process by its oscillation or damping index and a certain global time lag only. These two parameters, which are evaluated form the control error, are sufficient for continual adaptation, the former adjusting the common gain, the latter the time lags and leads inclusively the sampling period. The adaptation loops work like a usual control loop, no additional test signals are used.
