Abstract
Considered one of the high performing education systems, Shanghai’s education system has gained international attention since PISA 2009. This chapter provides an insider’s view of the workings of the education system. This chapter provides a detailed description of teacher qualification, teacher education, leadership development, career progression and professional development within Shanghai’s education system. It encapsulates the principle that the quality of an education system is found in investing in its educators – leadership and teachers who are dedicated to the mission of continual innovation and learning. Shanghai perceives teacher education as a lifelong journey and has invested in a comprehensive system to develop its educators professionally. Teaching twenty-first century skills is and remains a challenge to this progressive and successful society.
