Abstract
Distal pancreatectomy (exsection of the pancreatic body and tail) can be operated with or without splenic preservation. The significance of preserving the spleen has been shown for lesions confined to the pancreas or in situ lesions. Splenic preservation offers various advantages as: fewer postoperative complications [1], shorter length of hospitalization, delayed onset of diabetes, and reduction of the long-term risk of postsplenectomy sepsis and overwhelming postsplenectomy infection (OPSI) [2–5].
