Abstract

This chapter presents examples of placemaking interventions at different scales from the state of Queensland, Australia. This chapter includes different urban and suburban contexts and different scales at which placemaking initiatives occur: the inner-city (Brisbane), the suburban fringe (Brolga Lakes residential project) and coastal areas (Gold Coast). Based on the work of John Mongard, we define placemaking as a philosophy and a process to facilitate and create place. In this process: “both planning and design aim at facilitating place”. That is, the focus of planning and design processes is the implementation of projects that create high-quality places. The purpose of this chapter is to review the implementation of placemaking interventions at small, medium and large scales. The small-scale example is public art sculpture for small site activation. The medium‐scale case is a local government Centre Improvement Program (CIP) for the City of Gold Coast that later evolved into the City’s Placemaking program. The large-scale placemaking case study is the Brolga Lakes sustainable residential development, north of Brisbane. This chapter analyses elements of placemaking relevant to implementation: place processes, products and programmes. The chapter explains the elements of implementation framed around governance, stakeholders, resources, timelines and maintenance.
