Mutual Coupling Suppression MIMO Configuration for Mechanically Integrated 5G Smartphones

Abstract

This paper describes a low-profile 8 × 8 Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) antenna featuring very high radiation efficiency and efficient Envelope Correlation Coefficient (ECC) (<0.3) across the 5G (Fifth Generation) New Radio (NR) sub-6 GHz frequency bands for metallic-rimmed smartphones. The MIMO antenna system is realized by utilizing the longitudinal edges of the metallic-rimmed smartphone amid an extremely narrow space. The proposed topology achieves wide bandwidth of approximately 1 GHz from 3.2 GHz to 4.2 GHz that is applicable to 5G smartphone platforms. The antenna element efficiencies are confirmed to feature more than 55% to 72%.
