Abstract
The data from the studies were gathered in Hong Kong, whereas most of the research informing the motivation literature has taken place in Western countries. The work introduced in the book is, therefore, highly relevant to one of the major current issues in education; why are students from East Asia outperforming those from major Western countries? Research into the approaches to learning of Chinese students revealed the existence of intermediate approaches, combining memorising and understanding, which could be advantageous for academic performance. The motivational orientation framework is used to show that East Asians can benefit from multiple forms of motivation which might at first appear incompatible. In particular, selective educational systems boost individual goals, while cultural traditions provide a social supporting mechanism.
