Abstract
This chapter reviews the calculus of functions of two variables which includes partial derivatives and tangent plane approximations as well as MatLab tools for visualization. The vector cross product and its use in the tangent plane approximation is derived. The idea of the gradient and Hessian are reviewed along with error estimates for tangent plane approximations in terms of the Hessian. Finally, tests for the existance of extreme values for a function of two variables are derived.
