Abstract
This chapter introduces the general concept of failure criteria in the presence of cracks. The topic is first introduced based on the concept of stress concentration and then generalized based on the stress intensity factor, the energy release rate, and the J-integral. The chapter introduces as well experimental approaches based on standardized specimen types to formulate the failure criteria.
