Abstract
Fibrous tumors are characterized by the presence of fibrous content (collagen) and can be divided into fibrogenic tumors and fibrohistiocytic tumors. Fibrogenic tumors are characterized by the production of collagenous stroma and the absence of bone and cartilage formation. Desmoplastic fibroma of the bone and fibrosarcoma of the bone fall into this category. Fibrohistiocytic tumor category includes nonossifying fibroma/fibrous cortical defects and benign fibrous histiocytoma of the bone. Nonossifying fibromas/fibrous cortical defects and benign fibrous histiocytoma share a common histologic feature of benign fibroblastic proliferation intermingled with multinucleated osteoclast-type giant cells. Despite the name of the tumors, fibrous dysplasia and osteofibrous dysplasia are not included in this chapter. These tumors are classified as miscellaneous lesions with undefined neoplastic nature by the WHO classifications and will be further discussed in Chap. 8.
