Abstract

This chapter aims to discuss the trends and patterns of various aspects of the population in the top seven metro cities of India. The chapter starts with brief introductory remarks on historical trends of population change in cities. A comparative analysis of cities is made to study the trends of the total population, population growth rate, number of households, the share of slum population, population density, and intercensus net migrants for 1991, 2001, and 2011. It is found that the population has increased from 1991 to 2011 for all the cities except in Kolkata. The proportion of slum population to the total population of the city has increased in the last ten years (2001–2011) in the cities situated in South India, i.e. Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bangalore. Intercensal net migration shows a reverse relationship with the density of population in the area.
