Abstract

This chapter introduces the background of this book. It attempts to elaborate and explain the concept of theme, review of literature, significance of the study, innovative approaches, conceptual framework, and background of the selected metro cities. This chapter is an overture to the complex relation of population, land use/cover (LULC) and environment discussed in other chapters of the book. The introductory background sections briefs about the main concerns of Indian metropolitan cities with special focus on changes in population, LULC and environment. The sections in this chapter will assist to construct the readers’ perspective on the research.
