Abstract

The main goal of the study presented in this paper is to assess the progress and impact of the so-called ‘fertility tourism’ after the end of the one-child policy in China. The nature of the relationship between birth rate and fertility tourism is discussed. The paper tries to determine whether fertility tourism could be an opportunity for Spain to become an under-the-radar alternative to Chinese travellers. With some analysis on China’s changing demography related to one-child family planning policy, a comprehensive overview is provided for both Chinese tourists’ arrivals and expenditure in Spain. The fertility benchmark criteria for international fertility treatment destinations are then applied to discuss Spain’s potential role as a valuable fertility destination for Chinese travellers and travellers all over the world.
