Abstract
The continuous journey of exploiting hairy roots for various purposes is observed where these in vitro culture systems facilitate not only the production of plant-based pharmaceutically important secondary metabolites but also used as biological matrix for various biotechnological applications. At present, myriad literature is available to discuss about hairy root cultures and associated subjects; however, there is always a need to get updated information. Keeping this requirement in mind, the present chapter is prepared to provide concise fundamental information of hairy roots based research that will be helpful to the beginners as well as estabilished researchers, working in this area. This chapter also discusses the promises and prospects of hairy root cultures in spite of realities in terms of challenges realized during utilization.
