Abstract

The focus of China’s foreign policy actions in Southeast Asia is on implementing the Belt and Road Initiative and ensuring that the region is divided in its response to Chinese provocations in the East Sea of Vietnam (South China Sea). Beijing is establishing a global network of partners and building a so-called community of common destiny of humanity with Southeast Asia as a central focus. China’s continued tough stance on disputes in the South China Sea, however, has far-reaching impact on the Indo-Pacific and its neighbourhood. This chapter focuses, in particular, on the impact of these Chinese policies on Southeast Asia suggesting that it will be significant and problematic.
