Abstract

China’s economic successes have been accompanied by enormous social, political, and environmental problems, as well as increasing income inequality, regional disparity and corruption. These are systemic problems arising from the economic reforms that started in 1978 but to their credit, China’s leaders have recognised many of these issues over the past decades and initiated some measures to address them. However, despite these efforts, the problems persist because China’s reform path is ultimately incompatible with the type of action needed to tackle these problems. While Xi Jinping has enacted major political, economic and foreign policy initiatives over the past five years, the questions are: do these initiatives alter China’s reform path? And will they draw the country out of the trap created by its successes?
