Abstract
The philosophy of technology should be the philosophy which guides human’s remaking nature, as well as the directing principle for the achievement of modernization of science and technology. We should research and establish a philosophy of technology that exhibits scientific and Chinese characteristics while adopting theories from Western philosophy of technology and Japanese technology studies for reference. The philosophy of technology should focus on the practical problems concerned the relationship between technology and nature, between technology and society, the relationship among the internal element of technological development as well as the methodology of technological invention and application, in particular the problems concerned the value and evaluation of technology.
Changshu Chen is deceased.
Explanatory note: this paper was published by Professor Changshu Chen in 1983 and it is the first one as classic reading in modern research of philosophy of technology in China. Some of its references are in Chinese translations of foreign literature and these translations had failed to keep all of the information of their original works at that time. Since Professor Chen has passed away for years, it’s impossible for us to get the information about the original works of these Chinese translations. Hence, we translate Professor Chen’s Chinese manuscript into English in accordance with the original.
