Abstract

After the proposal of Mereschkowsky hypothesis, or in parallel to it, various hypotheses were presented including the idea of endosymbiosis. Sapp’s book (1994) detailed historical arguments on these hypotheses. Khakhina (1979/1992) presented endosymbiotic discourses in Russia. Mitochondrial endosymbiosis was also proposed in the meantime, but was not supported by experimental evidence. In this chapter, I will present various discourses on symbiosis and endosymbiosis from the end of the nineteenth century until the mid-twentieth century.
