Abstract
A linear accelerator (LINAC) is a device that uses electromagnetic waves to accelerate charged particles to high energies in a linear path. LINAC based treatment was first done in 1953 at Hammersmith Hospital, London. The versatility of LINAC has led to the replacement of telecobalt with linear accelerator for external beam radiotherapy treatment. The chapter describes the components, and functioning, of a linear accelerator.
