Abstract
This chapter explores the complex nature of the instructional side of teaching, how to best prepare students for learning and get the best outcomes. Teachers bring their own experience of being a learner and their own values to teaching, and they are also confronted with many pedagogical theories about how children learn and how to get the best outcomes. This is reflected in the issues highlighted in the following pre-service teacher chapters. The author in discussing these issues is led to reflect on her own experiences as a learner and a teacher of many years standing. The skill of teaching content and managing the learning outcomes for all students in a classroom setting will be an ongoing challenge for these pre-service teachers and will require ongoing reflection as they strive for the best learning outcomes for a diverse range of student needs.
