Abstract

Jordan and Saudi Arabia share a unique relation of mutual interdependence. While economically and politically the Hashemites are dependent on al-Saud, for internal and regional stability, Saudi Arabia seeks Jordanian partnership. It acquires significance because of the historical legacy of rivalry between al-Saud and Hashemites. Until the 1920s, both had been bitter rivals for dominance in the Arabian Peninsula, but with the changing geopolitical dynamics, they emerged as competitors for regional supremacy. Their relations, however, transformed after the World War-II and the rise of pan-Arabism. The demise of pan-Arabism in the wake of the June War of 1967 and oil-boom of the 1970s changed their dynamics and laid the foundations for contemporary bilateral ties.
