Abstract
There are different paths to becoming a midwife. In the setting I investigated, midwifery is a distinct profession. Here, the interaction between nursing and midwifery often leads to conflicts as they sit on an arena of competition. Which retains the ownership of newborn care? Is it plausible to relieve shortages of nurses by enhancing midwives’ skills? This chapter offers a sociological-historical account, aiming to provide an example of the construction of interprofessional boundaries more generally. Interaction is shaped by evolutionary aspects of the healthcare system. Health technology play an essential role in it. Conflicts can thus be explained by boundary expansion within organisations and the medicalisation of professions. But not everything in this interaction is discouraging. For competition is not inevitable on a political level.
