Abstract
This chapter explores how in the late 1920s Thomas Wolfe met and befriended Younghill Kang, who has generally been considered one of the first Korean novelists. It argues that their relationship was not only far more enduring and fruitful than has generally been recognized so far but also somewhat ambiguous in one way or another. This chapter also discusses the extent to which Kang’s encounter with Wolfe exerted a major impact on his literary career as a whole. It further identifies similarities and differences between Wolfe and Kang.
