Abstract

Intermediate uveitis (IU) is characterized by ocular inflammation involving mainly the vitreous. Pars planitis is a specific type of intermediate uveitis and an important cause of pediatric uveitis. It is considered as a potentially blinding disease due to complications including cataract, vitreous condensation, cystoid macular edema, optic disc edema, vitreous hemorrhage and band keratopathy. Early and aggressive treatment is needed in terms of preventing ocular complications and preserving visual function. Exclusion of infectious and non‑infectious causes which may present with intermediate uveitis is of utmost importance before starting treatment. Current four‑step therapy consists of corticosteroids, immunesuppressives, anti‑TNF‑α agents and finally pars plana vitrectomy and/or laser photocoagulation for the management of complications.
