Abstract

Optical burst switching (OBS) along with wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) is a very promising and useful technology to meet the ever-increasing bandwidth requirement for different Internet and multimedia-based real-time applications. Although promising and effective but one way reservation protocol of optical burst switching technology leads to burst contention. Proper contention resolution is a very important issue in OBS. Among different available contention resolution techniques, deflection routing and segmentation-based dropping schemes are discussed in this paper. A comparative performance analysis of data handling capacity for the above-mentioned schemes is presented here. Appropriate mathematical equations are considered to evaluate the performance. The contention resolution performance is determined in terms of packet loss probability versus incoming traffic under MATLAB environment. The results show that the deflection routing provides better contention resolution than the segmentation dropping to the OBS network.
