Abstract
In 1986, in Mumbai, then Bombay, the real work on diabetic foot began in the equally premier All-India Institute of Diabetes (AIID), SL Raheja Hospital, now Fortis Raheja. AIID had started having concentrated diabetic foot work. All the cases were taken up under general anesthesia with tremendous risk, a practice which continues in large part of the country even now, giving rise to myriad issues discussed in Emergency Surgery and Perioperative Diabetic Emergencies in this volume. Those were historic days during which learning about the diabetic foot, assessing the foot and the patient with what investigations were then available, before and during intraoperative monitoring, using methods now sparingly used.
