Abstract

It is well established that a higher level of serum HDL-cholesterol is associated with lower incidence of coronary artery disease (Gotto Jr et al. 1978) and increased longevity (Mazzotti et al. 2014; Milman et al. 2014). Policosanol (PCO) supplementation is widely used in Central America and Latin America to treat dyslipidemia and manage cardiovascular burden. PCO is mixture of eight aliphatic primary alcohols refined from sugarcane wax (Saccharum officinarum L.). It is available as an over-the-counter dietary supplement to treat dyslipidemia in some countries. It has been reported that consumption of PCO can significantly reduce serum total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels as well as raise serum HDL-cholesterol (Gouni-Berthold and Berthold 2002).
