Herbal Medicine in India

Abstract

A regular intake of fruits is now well known to promote general good health and well-being as well as to lower the risk of various chronic diseases prevalent among humans. During the last two decades, a number of functional foods based on such fruits have been published and the list is increasing. India is the storehouse for many such fruits which are of immense importance in providing a wide range of health benefits. Various polyphenols, pectin, vitamins, and minerals present in these fruits have been shown to offer protective effects on human’s health and form key components of the healthy and balanced diet. Most of the consumers around the world are now conscious of eating healthy to maintain a relatively disease-free lifespan. The chemical composition, nutritional significance, and medicinal properties in promoting good health by some of the fruits commonly available in India such as amla (Phyllanthus emblica), pomegranate (Punica granatum), jamun (Syzygium cumini), bel (Aegle marmelos), sitaphal or custard apple (Annona squamosa), jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus), ber (Zizyphus mauritiana), lasura (Cordia myxa), and phalsa (Grewia asiatica) have been discussed in this chapter.
