Abstract

Sophia’ comment points to what many young people feel is the empty or broken promise of contemporary higher education. The ‘truths of youth’ which we introduced at the start of this book include the promise that higher education will lead to a secure and desirable future and improved access to life chances, including geographic, social and economic mobilities. These truths belie the changes that are sweeping higher education as a system, and the new youth realities that are emerging from them.
