Strategies for the Synthesis of Anti-inflammatory Metabolites of Unsaturated Fatty Acids

Abstract

ω-3 Fatty acids such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) produce hydroxylated metabolites that mediate anti-inflammatory and pro-resolving actions. Such metabolites are categorized as E-series and D-series resolvins, protectins, and maresins. Herein, we summarize the syntheses of these metabolites reported up to mid-2018, focusing on the strategy and stereoselectivity in the construction of conjugated olefins and hydroxy-bearing carbons. Sections focus on conjugated triene, diene, and tetraene. Selectivity and yields are specified whenever possible.
